The first thing you should know is that there are no deer-proof greenery. All bushes, shrubs, bulbs and even evergreens are prone to be wiped out by these eating machines. If a deer is famished, especially a pregnant deer, they will eat any living plant without exception. Deer will also eat any plant life they can inhale during the depleted winter months especially in areas of the country that get cold in the winter so you may need to apply deer repellent year round to deter the deer.

So what will you do to shield the plants you work so hard to grow and costs so much to start over? The first thing to keep in mind when looking to remedy the situation is that deer are creatures of habit and will travel in the same pattern, over the same ground each and every day. So the objective is to disrupt the deer of the habit of going across your lawn and consuming your plants along the way. That is where deer repellent comes in handy rather then surrounding your entire property with an 8-foot fence.

There are basically three types of deer repellent. The first type is the solid repellent that you bind to a bush or flowering vegetation. These are effective at keeping deer away from that specific location but will do very little to disrupt the deer’s habit of going through your property and endangering your other plants to destruction. They are known to work for at least a month and are a noteworthy tool for your beloved bushes and flowers.

The second deer repellent is the spray variety which is workable in interrupting the deer’s travel patterns but can be detrimental to certain types of shrubs especially if they contain ground hot pepper. The list of ingredients in these sprays, while effective, really smell bad so be careful not to plan any outdoor activity for at least a full day after application. It would be wise and appreciated if you let others close to your house know you intend to spray. Also, you will need to persist in spraying at least once a month and after every rainfall to keep the deer from establishing to their old habit.

The third form of deer repellent comes in the variant of a powder and is best applied after it rains or if the plants you wish to protect have been wet with a garden hose. This repellent is not nearly as smelly and lasts up to a month even if it rains in between applications. This form of repellent can applied to almost any greenery without any noticeable and ruinous effects but is quite a bit more clumsy to apply then a spray, and can leave many plants vulnerable if the application is not careful.

This last piece of advice is provided so you understand what will happen once you alter the deer’s regular routine. The deer will follow a new pattern across your neighbor’s property and will consume their garden. Others that use some form of deer repellent also have informed their neighbors and as a result the whole neighborhood will use some form of deer repellent. This keeps the deer in the woods where they should be rather then adventuring across the neighborhood devouring the plants we grow in our gardens.
